If you must have a 250 MB limit on files, then put a notice on the webpage ---
Will be rolled out some time this (or next) week.
Thanks for the suggestion.

David,
I'll see if I can interrupt an overly large upload in Chrome. I'll also post something about the limits, although maybe not yet in the release I'm preparing now.
So everything of this is going to come some day just not tomorrow.
Feel free to get your friends to vote on this bug and it might happen faster. :-)

It was not interrupted at all; the entire file (284 MB) uploaded before I got the message. I am using Google Chrome.
The "is my file supported" tab says nothing about the size limit, it only lists the supported file types and conversions.
I am only suggesting adding a single line of text to your page stating the 250 MB limit. Not too difficult! -
David,
if you upload anything that's too large, the upload should be interrupted immediately. It's supposed to do that so if it didn't work, then you maybe used a browser where interrupting an upload doesn't work. I use Firefox and it works fine in Firefox.
Also, you can see what file formats are (mostly -- I know) working by clicking on the "is my file supported" link before uploading.
If you're still unsure then, try uploading a smaller file of the same format first.
